Capital projects represent a critical driver of organisational growth, strategic positioning, and long-term value creation. It is well established in the finance literature, as noted by Modigliani and Miller that the value of a firm is shaped by the investment decisions it undertakes and the quality of its capital allocation processes. This presentation examines the principal capital expenditure appraisal techniques used in professional practice to evaluate major investment proposals, with particular emphasis on the methods most widely adopted by organisations across sectors. Because these techniques rely heavily on forward-looking financial information, the session will also address the forecasting approaches commonly employed in practice to support robust capital project evaluation and decision-making.
