This webinar will provide an overview of the VAT considerations in relation to the gambling and betting industry. It will focus on the relevant VAT principles and other considerations including, in particular, the guidelines issued by the Malta tax authority in relation to the exempt betting supplies, the definition of electronically supplied services as well as the place of supply rules as applicable.

Vanessa Micallef joined the Deloitte Malta’s tax department in 2006 after graduating with Honours in Bachelor of Accountancy from University of Malta. In 2008, she obtained a Diploma in Taxation from the Malta Institute of Taxation. Vanessa has been a member of the tax team since that time, working on both direct tax and indirect tax projects for local and multinational groups. Since 2011, Vanessa focused on VAT and is currently a senior manager within the indirect tax team. Her role primarily entails providing indirect tax advice to entities carrying out business in Malta especially to gambling and betting operators and companies holding immovable property in Malta. She is also involved in VAT compliance projects for both local and international firms and assist companies undergoing VAT investigations. In addition, Vanessa currently works on various due diligence engagements and M&A transactions.
Jonathan Pace has been active in the local tax and financial services industry since 2014 and is currently a Manager within the Deloitte Malta Indirect Tax practice, focusing on the provision of indirect tax advisory services to both domestic and international clients. Having attained the ACCA qualification in 2016, Jonathan is an accountant by profession and is a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and a member of the Malta Institute of Taxation. Jonathan also forms part of the Young Members focus group within the Malta Institute of Accountants and occasionally delivers specialised indirect tax training.
